This week online travel agency CheapAir.com became the first online travel agency that will allow it’s visitors to book direct flights between LA and Havana, Cuba.  The initial direct flights from LA to Cuba are offered for travel on the 12th, 19th and 26th December with more flights to be added over the next few months as these flights will sell out quickly.

Back in February 2015 CheapAir.com was the first site to allow travellers to book flights between the USA and Cuba from Miami, but that meant west coast travellers had no option for direct flights. But if you are wanting to fly direct to Havana, Cuba from LA you will need to select one of twelve government approved reasons listed below:

1. family visits
2. official business of the U.S. government, foreign governments, and certain intergovernmental organizations
3. journalistic activity
4. professional research and professional meetings
5. educational activities
6. religious activities
7. public performances, clinics, workshops, athletic and other competitions, and exhibitions
8. support for the Cuban people
9. humanitarian projects
10. activities of private foundations or research or educational institutes
11. exportation, importation, or transmission of information or information materials
12. certain export transactions that may be considered for authorization under existing regulations and guidelines.

CheapAir.com stated that 27% of travellers had selected #5 educational activities followed by #4 professional research & professional meetings with #1 family visits only accounting for 14% of reasons. Cuba is certainly a destination you want to visit soon as it’s still untouched by American businesses and tourism.
